Self-Hosted Geocoding Server Setup (Nominatim & Photon)

Show street addresses in Traccar without paying per request or hitting rate limits. I set up your own reverse geocoding server with OpenStreetMap data and connect it to Traccar.

What's included

Nominatim or Photon

The right geocoder for your needs and server size, installed and tuned.

Your regions

OpenStreetMap data imported for the countries or regions where your devices operate.

Connected to Traccar

Traccar configured to use your geocoder for addresses in the web interface, reports and notifications.

Address caching

Lookups cached so repeated positions don't hit the geocoder again.

Updates

An update process for OpenStreetMap data so new roads and addresses appear over time.

Private and unlimited

No API keys, no per-request fees, and your location data never leaves your servers.

How it works

  1. 1

    Check your needs

Countries covered, number of devices and how many address lookups you make.

  2. 2

    Server sizing

A recommendation for the server, since geocoding data needs disk space and memory.

  3. 3

    Install and import

The geocoder is installed and map data imported.

  4. 4

    Connect and test

Traccar is pointed at your geocoder and addresses are checked against known places.

Frequently asked questions

Why not use Google Maps or another paid API?

Paid geocoding APIs charge per request, and a busy fleet can make a lot of address lookups. A self-hosted server costs only the server it runs on, with no usage limits.

Nominatim or Photon: which is better?

Nominatim is the standard OpenStreetMap geocoder and is very accurate for reverse geocoding. Photon is lighter and faster for some setups. I'll recommend one based on your regions and server.

How big a server do I need?

It depends on the regions you import. A single country needs far less than a whole continent. I'll size the server before you buy anything.

Are the addresses as good as Google's?

Address quality depends on OpenStreetMap coverage in your area. It's excellent in many countries and improving everywhere. I can test sample positions from your fleet first.

Can it run on the same server as Traccar?

For small regions, often yes. For larger regions, a separate server is better so geocoding doesn't slow down tracking.
